Languishing and Mental Health
Languishing was a lingering challenge for me, one that I had wrestled with for years.
It's a struggle that psychologists and therapists are still working to understand and address.
This state of being continues to wreak havoc on our physical health, mental well-being, and overall sense of fulfillment. But before I delve into the depths of languishing and how to lead a flourishing life despite mental health challenges, allow me to share a glimpse of my personal journey.
I've always been one to ponder life's big questions: What is my purpose? Why am I here? These queries, coupled with a tendency towards overthinking and self-criticism, led me down a path where I may not have met the criteria for depression or poor mental health, but I certainly felt the weight of languishing.
Languishing, as I've come to understand it, is a state characterized by a lack of zest for life, a sense of stagnation, and an overall feeling of emptiness. It's existing without truly living – functioning adequately, yet lacking fulfillment.
To put it into perspective, while mental illness affects about 10-15% of the population in any given year, research suggests that a staggering 40-60% of certain populations experience languishing.
In 2022, I embarked on a journey to pursue a master's in coaching psychology, initially driven by a desire to become a leadership coach.
Little did I know, this decision would shed light on my own struggles with languishing and provide me with the tools to help others navigate similar challenges.
"The simple question 'How are you?' can feel like an unwelcome pop quiz, leaving you scrambling for a socially acceptable response, unsure of the answer yourself."
Languishing manifests in various ways – emotional flatness, unease, procrastination, disconnection, and a loss of meaning. For me, it often translates into low energy and a pervasive feeling of numbness.
But now, armed with the knowledge of positive psychology and peak performance coaching, I'm equipped to support leaders, teams, and individuals in not just overcoming challenges, but thriving in every aspect of their lives.
